Veteran leader of Communist Party of India leader A.B. Bardhan passed away on January 2, 2016, in New Delhi at the age of 91. A widely respected politician, he played a pivotal role during the challenging era of coalition politics and was CPI’s general secretary for 16 years from 1996. A postgraduate in economics with a degree in law, he was vocal critic of communal politics in India.
Ardhendu Bhushan Bardhan was born in Barisal, Bengal Presidency, British India, which is now in Bangladesh. At the age of 15, Comrade Bardhan embraced Communism after moving to Nagpur. In 1940, he joined the All India Students Federation (AISF) at the Nagpur University and joined as the member of then banned Communist Party of India (CPI). He became the President of the Nagpur University Students' Union and a full-time student organizer. In 1945, he became the Secretary of AISF. He was a well read man holding a postgraduate degree in economics and also a degree in law. Not only that, he also co-authored some of the books with E M S Namboodiripad and others. He is also known to have written extensively on adivasis(tribes), minorities and also about the history of the working class movement.
The life long communist was widely supported by his wife Padma, who taught at the Nagpur University and was also a Communist. They have a daughter Alka, who is a doctor in Ahmedabad stays with her husband, Samir Barua.
Political Career
Communist Party of India (CPI) matured at the time of trade union movement and Bardhan belongs to that era. In 1957, he became a MLA from Nagpur. Later, he became the General Secretary of the AITUC, the trade union wing of CPI. He is known to have worked with workers from different sectors ranging from railways, textile, defense, electricity etc. He also participated in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement in 1956 and was even arrested for it.
Later, Bardhan moved to Delhi and joined national politics. In 1994, he became the General Secretary of All India Trade Union Congress and Deputy General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, in the year 1995.
At the age of 71, he became the General Secretary of CPI when Indrajit Gupta stepped down after joining the United Front Government as the Home Minister. Bardhan served as the General Secretary from 1996-2002. He is well remembered for the campaign which he initiated in response to Lal Krishna Advani’s Rath Yatra.
He played an important role in the formation of United Progressive Alliance and was supported by the Communist Party of India. Bardhan, put forward the name of Pratibha Patel to the post of the President of India.
Illness and Death
The veteran leader Bardhan, suffered from a paralytic stroke in December 2015. He was admitted to the hospital. On 2nd January 2016, at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in New Delhi, the 91 year old comrade passed away.
